Why I became a practitioner

I've been helping families to prepare for the arrival of a baby since 2010 in various different ways – teaching antenatal classes, as a breastfeeding counsellor and as a birth doula. I used Natal Hypnotherapy myself to great effect during the pregnancy and birth of my third child, who was born in 2017. Since having had such a positive personal experience with it, I found myself recommending Natal Hypnotherapy specifically to birth doula clients who were interested in hypnobirthing. When the opportunity arose to train to teach this highly effective way of preparing for labour and birth to other families, I jumped at the chance!

My core beliefs surrounding pregnancy and birth

I believe that pregnancy and birth are an incredibly important time in life – for the one bearing the child, for the surrounding family and the child themselves. For the vast majority of people it's a straightforward process, when supported effectively, but as with all things in life, for some people it's a bit more complicated. Whatever the circumstances, family set up and health or otherwise of the individual, I strongly believe that everyone deserves compassionate care to support them to make the very best decisions when bringing a baby into the world. Feeling that you understand the processes of birth and learning how to make informed choices within the UK maternity system really helps you to feel involved in your care, helping you to come out of it stronger, both personally and as a family. I believe that using Natal Hypnotherapy as preparation for birth can be a key part of this.

My experience of working with pregnant women and my personal experience of Natal Hypnotherapy

I've been working with pregnant people and their families since 2010. Between 2010 and 2013 I taught a different type of antenatal class and since 2013 I have worked as a birth doula, supporting all kinds of births at home and in hospital. I was also a breastfeeding counsellor with one of the main breastfeeding support charities between 2011 and 2017 which often involved support in pregnancy with feeding choices and preparing to welcome a baby into the family.

When I was pregnant with my third child in 2016, I decided to use Natal Hypnotherapy as part of my preparation. I was a bit slow coming round to the idea of hypnobirthing, but having seen doula clients I'd supported using it to great effect, I decided to try it for myself. I really liked the Natal Hypnotherapy approach, which is warm, practical and down to earth. I found the relaxation mp3s invaluable during pregnancy and a long early phase of labour when I was finding it hard to switch off. My third birth was the best experience of them all for me, and the immediate post partum period felt much easier than either of my other two and I feel that Natal Hypnotherapy played a big part in that for me.

Feedback from my classes

“As a father I found the Natal Hypnotherapy course from Kris to be both educational and relaxing. It is interesting to learn about the process of birth and for me that removed a lot of fear from the upcoming event. It also helped me see my place in the birth and helped me understand what I could best to do support my birthing partner.

Kris is a great coach and clearly experienced as both a birthing instructor and a parent. The course was delivered in a fun and light way for such a serious subject and her expertise easily shines through which left us both more comfortable at the end of the course. I cannot recommend Kris and Natal Hypnotherapy enough for anyone going through the wonder of bringing a child into this world.” RL 2019

"This course should be on the NHS. All expectant parents can benefit."

"A must for all couples. A very bonding experience - empowering for both the mother and the father - better than any NCT or postnatal class I have ever attended. My little girl was born in 58 minutes! (from 3cm dilated to her being placed on my tummy). Her arrival was an amazing experience - I tell her she was born with love. I felt in control throughout the whole of my labour and much more knowledgeable about my body and what stage I was act. My little girl and I acted as a team - and it is something I will remember for the rest of my life.”

"As a worried expectant father, I learned so many ways to help my wife - as well as building my confidence to deal effectively with the medical team at the hospital”
"Fantastic course, so pleased we came, I would recommend it to everyone, it should be compulsory for all pregnant women, their partners and midwives. There was a wealth of information that was really useful especially the tools for birth."

"It was very well structured and very informative to someone who was very sceptical at the beginning. The key parts for me were the breathing control and giving me the confidence to support my partner. The trainer was very good, very clear, was not judgmental and encouraged questions - the delivery of course was excellent."

"Thanks for a great 2 days. It was really useful for me to understand about the phases of birth and how to deal with the medical team and being given an important role in the whole process. I particularly enjoyed the hypnosis sessions and felt very comfortable asking any questions and talking about my fears"

"Understanding the physiology in plain English was great - it made me realize how natural it is and that relaxing is going to be far more beneficial than panicking"
