Why I became a practitioner
After a number of years spent as a midwife caring for mums and babies during labour, I attended a study day delivered by Maggie, introducing Natal Hypnotherapy and it's many benefits. I was immediately hooked and knew I had found what I had been looking for professionally - a way to combine my love for all that is labour and birth, and to work with women in a way that would give them the best chance of achieving a positive birth experience. Maggie's approach resonated very much with me as it is inclusive of all women, however and wherever they birth their babies, and it also works in partnership with those caring for a woman during labour.
My core beliefs surrounding pregnancy and birth
Pregnancy and birth is indeed miraculous even though it's happening every minute all over our world. I see women in labour as powerful and beautiful. All women have access to what nature has provided to help them through labour and birth, if we can minimize some of the fear and anxiety that hinders these processes. Wherever or however a woman births her baby she has never 'failed'. Wherever or however birth takes place it is a baby's birthday, a new member of the family being born, and a such, all women should have an equal opportunity for a positive birth experience.
My experience of working with pregnant women and my personal experience of Natal Hypnotherapy
I became a student midwife in 1985 and from my first time with a woman in labour (accompanied by a fantastic midwife) I knew this was to be my specialist area. That notion never changed from that first time, and I can still remember the mum's name and what she called her baby girl! From those early years as a an NHS midwife I practised in many different areas, from wards to community, management, Delivery Suite and Midwife Led areas. But the majority of my career has been spent on Delivery Suite, looking after women and babies who need medical as well as midwifery care.
I left NHS midwifery practice in t, but continue to work with women in my private practice.
As a Natal Hypnotherapy Practitioner I have found that mums and dads come along to classes for a myriad of reasons. Many have known that they will birth their babies in a medicalised environment and these women and their partners have found that Natal Hypnotherapy has been crucial in enabling them to approach their labour and birth with knowledge and confidence. I can recall a 4th and a 5th time mum who came to class - VERY experienced mothers, and they couldn't believe the difference it made to their labours.
I have many more stories about women I have worked with and often tell them during classes. Natal Hypnotherapy will help every woman AND her birth partner.
