Why I became a practitioner
When I became a parent, I also became really passionate about labour and birth, so I studied and qualified to teach Antenatal Courses. I love educating parents on labour, birth and early parenting, and becoming a Hypnobirthing Practitioner means that I can also now equip parents with an additional coping method for labour and birth.
I chose Natal Hypnotherapy because it is evidence based, and really sensible and versatile. Parents can use this without feeling any awkwardness, in any labour and birth scenario.
My core beliefs surrounding pregnancy and birth
I believe that pregnancy and birth are very healthy and natural states/ processes, and with encouragement and support from their community and healthcare professionals, most women could give birth healthily without intervention.
A baby's birth is the start of their life, also signalling the start of a new season in the parents' life, and so it's important that this is a positive experience for all, whatever happens in the labour process.
My experience of working with pregnant women and my personal experience of Natal Hypnotherapy
I am an Antenatal Teacher, so work regularly with pregnant women and their partners to prepare for labour and birth, parenting and the transition to parenthood.
I did a Natal Hypnotherapy course in preparation for the birth of my 4th baby, and I loved how "down-to-earth" and approachable it was. It really helped me to protect my birth intentions, focussing on what I wanted and what was most important to me.
Feedback from my classes
"Emily was brilliant. Her way of explaining is excellent and she always took time to respond to personal questions. Furthermore, she went the extra mile for more specific questions I had. What I also loved was how she transformed the course to work online with lots of interactive online exercises to do for us as participants and as group work. She did a great job and I have told so many of my friends and family about it already!"
"Emily was very efficient in sending the supporting documents after each session. She was enthusiastic and very approachable. Her knowledge of labour and antenatal care shone through and helped me to feel at ease and excited about my babys birth."
"She was great, her voice was lovely and calm for the meditations and she kept the conversations going, even when some people (me included) were reluctant to speak up".
"Emily is a highly professional, engaging and knowledgable practitioner. I really enjoyed the course."
"It made all the difference" - Baby born 11/20
"I attended a Natal Hypnotherapy Class with Emily Smith. The course has helped me to feel relaxed and confident leading up to the birth and during the birth whereas before I was filled with fear. It's also helped me to understand my body and the whole birthing process fully so I felt in control and knew what was going on. After the course I felt that I could control how long labour takes and how quickly my cervix would soften and open (although it was mentioned that every labour is individual and we cannot control everything). During birth I realised that I could control my breathing and attitude, but not necessarily my body. The opening of my cervix took very long and remained at 4cm for 14 hours. Several measures did not advance it. It was only when the sac was popped by the midwife that the remaining 6cm opened within one hour. Maybe it would be good to talk about that kind of scenarios a little more and what to do when it is hard to continue with hypnobirthing.
I am so glad I participated in this course. It helped me understand birth and my body and made me very confident. However, because of the whole process taking 35 hours for me, I got tired and exhausted (yet powered through) and in the end I decided to take measures I originally did not want (i.e. epidural, oxytocin drip). It was difficult to continue hypnobirthing and staying concentrated at some point. So, I would say that leading up to the birth the course helped me massively, yet during birth I felt it didn't so much and did not help me in the ways I had believed before. Nevertheless, I would describe my birth experience as super positive."
"I was terrified of giving birth" Baby born 12/2020 "
Being very anxious by nature I decided to do the course upon recommendation as I was terrified of giving birth - the course was absolutely invaluable to my experience. I had a wonderful first birth - under 4 hours , no need for medical intervention during labour and pain so manageable through breathing techniques learnt in Hypnobirthing that by the time I decided it was time to go to hospital I was fully dilated! Another amazing aspect of the course is how it helped my partner be an amazing support."
"The course gave me good coping strategies for early labour" Baby born 09/2020
I attended a Natal Hypnotherapy Class and used the Effective Birth Preparation (Hospital/ Birth Centre) audio track.
I had a friendly and knowledgeable tutor, who made me more aware of what to expect during labour and options available. She gave me good coping strategies for early labour. It helped a lot to keep me in control.
