Why I became a practitioner
As a very anxious person by nature, when i fell pregnant i felt sure that I would spend my whole pregnancy worrying - in particular about the birth - and decided to look into ways to stay calm and relaxed during pregnancy and labour.
I read the Natal Hypnotherapy book and listened to the hypnosis tracks regularly in the weeks leading up to my birth and not only did they really relax me during the later stages of pregnancy and help me to sleep, i was also very lucky to have a short (6 hours from first contraction to my daughter arriving), drug and intervention free, straight forward birth. I found the pain manageable and the whole birth experience a positive and empowering one. I feel that one of the main reasons for this was my use of natal hypnotherapy techniques and the fact that i remained calm, relaxed and in control throughout my whole labour.
I felt so passionately about sharing my experience with other women and wanted to tell everyone how beneficial natal hypnotherapy was, that I decided to train in it so that I could really spread the word far and wide and help other women who may be feeling frightened and anxious about giving birth to have a great experience like i did.
Pregnant women hear far too many horror stories - which are completely unhelpful - I want more women to know that not everyone has a horrific birth story, and there's no reason why they should either :)
My core beliefs surrounding pregnancy and birth
I believe that far too many women now are going into labour feeling terrified of a process that is completely natural and one that we were born to do.
Everyone wants to share their horror stories with you or those of someone they know - it's as though a story isn't worth telling unless someone had a 50 hour long labour, a gruesome c-section or a near death experience! Coupled with everything you see on TV (one born every minute) and social media, birth is nearly always painted as an excruciatingly painful, awful experience and one to be feared.
This was not the case for me, nor for a number of women I know personally, and I feel that if more women heard the positive stories and went into birth feeling calm and excited rather than terrified that more women would have positive births themselves.
My experience of working with pregnant women and my personal experience of Natal Hypnotherapy
I used Natal Hypnotherapy during pregnancy and the birth of my daughter. I found the content extremely useful, reminding me that my body is designed to give birth and that there is nothing to fear. I listened to the hypnosis tracks religiously in the run up to labour and they really helped me to relax and to sleep! When it came the birth, it was a subconscious and instinctive thing, but i just breathed deeply and stayed calm and in control throughout. As a result my labour was very quick and manageable, from first contraction to my daughter arriving was 6 hours in total and i found the whole experience to be a positive and empowering one. I have now delivered sessions to three expectant couples, all of whom enjoyed it very much and I am looking forward to working with many more mums and dads to be!
