"I never set out to have a natural labour and was convinced I would need pethidine"

Lindsey Whitehead
Hospital
Prepare to conceive and the Natal Programme

"Thank you so much for producing such excellent CDs which are the sole reason I was able to have a quick and totally manageable labour with my first child. I had been recommended your CDs by my friend, but I was sceptical that I would be able to use them in my labour when the pain got bad, as I am such a "control freak" in my life that I struggle to relax, but I gave them a go - on the basis there was nothing to lose.

I suffered a miscarriage last year at 13 weeks- my husband and I were devastated. The same friend sent me the preparing to conceive CD - I got pregnant immediately but was then incredibly stressed at the thought of losing another baby. I listened to the relaxation CD every day, and it really helped me calm down and remain positive about the pregnancy, and connect with the tiny baby (now 8lbs 8!!).

Thankfully everything went well and I began listening to the birth prep CD from about 33 weeks onwards. It helped me relax, but I never really believed it would be able to take away or help me control the pain of serious labour, as I'm a real wimp. I hoped however it would get me through the initial stages so when I got to hospital for some "proper" pain relief I wouldn't be sent home and told I was only at 1cm, as had happened to friends.

When my labour started I remained calm, relaxed and focused on breathing; I relaxed as much as possible during and between contractions and reminded myself of the things on the cd. I thought I would stay at home as long as I felt able to manage the contractions, but as I've said, I always intended to go into hospital for drugs when they became necessary. I listened to the CD constantly for about 4 hrs lying down in a dark room with my husband using the 3,2,1 relax technique, then suddenly decided to go to hospital - I don't know what changed, as the contractions were always bearable if I breathed through them and relaxed, but I just wanted to go in. When I got there I was amazed to be told the baby's head was right there and I was ready to push! The midwives were amazed at how calm and relaxed I was, given this was a first baby, and that I'd managed the contractions and then the pushing without any drugs - I was even fully dressed at this point, having not had time to take off my shoes or jewellery! About 10 mins later my son was born, looking very lively and after a remarkably quick and painless labour.

I am sure that none of the above would have been possible without the relaxation CDs taking away the "fear" of labour and pain. As I have said, I never set out to have a natural labour and was convinced I would need pethidine at the very least, but had no problem with that. I also thought I am the least susceptible person to hypnosis as I'm so manic, and never imagined I would be able to entirely manage my pain and the whole labour by concentrating on the breathing, relaxing as much as possible and reminding myself this was nothing to be afraid of and my body would manage this by itself. I cannot recommend these CDs highly enough or thank you Maggie for making the thing I'd spent at least the last trimester worrying about pass amazingly easily and manageably."

"I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetics at 28 weeks"

Kath Peacock has kindly agreed to share her story to help other women with Gestational Diabetes:-

"I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetics at 28 weeks. I was promptly told at a group diabetic session that my plans for a home birth were not possible and that we would all now be classed as 'high risk.' I found the news devastating as I'd had a very traumatic delivery with my eldest daughter and was adamant I was never going to repeat that experience. I carefully watched my diet and found that I had no high readings and ultrasounds did not demonstrate that my baby had not become the gigantic monster baby they had warned us of at the group session!

I read Maggie's birth preparation manual which really helped me to look at things more rationally and gave me confidence in my decision to birth at home and trust my instincts. It also reinforced the idea that birth was a totally natural process that should not be feared and this stopped me doubting my decision to birth at home. Using this evidence I met with a lovely consultant midwife who agreed that the risk for shoulder dystocia was not high and as long as the baby fed quickly there would be no reason to monitor them in hospital. I was then given until my due to date to have a home birth. Having a confident approach helped me discuss the situation with midwives and consultants and reach an outcome that I felt was tailored to my individual needs rather than just blindly agreeing to intervention because of hospital 'policy'.

As my due date got closer I finished work at 36 weeks and even though I was the size of house and felt very achy. I walked everywhere, doing at least a mile everyday and bounced on my exercise ball in the evening. I could feel the baby's head moving lower down. The walking really helped keep my energy levels up and my legs didn't swell (my ankles looked like an elephant's first time round). I prepared for the home birth and got myself a pool and and tens machine. I couldn't wait for things to kick off and I packed everything I needed and made arrangements for my eldest daughter to be looked after if needed. Also having a toddler and a very busy job I had very little time to relax during most of my pregnancy. Making time to listen to the birth preparation and relaxation tracks made me take time out to relax and I really looked forward to having some 'me' time! I listened to my birth preparation track every day.

2 days before my due date me and my husband wandered off to the pub for lunch and briskly walked back. The rest of the day was uneventful. I went to bed at about 11. At about 3pm in the morning I felt very peculiar, restless and alert. I woke up and my jaw was very tight (It felt like I had been clenching it in my sleep). I got up and went downstairs and did a bit of internet shopping. at about 3.15 I got off the sofa and felt a small 'pop' and my waters had broken. There wasn't a dramatic flood like you see in films - it was just a few splashes. I then went up stairs, went to the loo and had quick shower.

By now contractions were starting. The intensity and frequency of them shocked me. I wasn't sure if I would be able to do this for hours as they were taking my breath away. The hot water really helped and I used my wave visualization which I'd been practicing. I popped a clean nightdress and then went and woke my husband up. I almost didn't bother as I thought he could do with the sleep and didn't want to wake him as I thought I had hours to go. He gave me a cuddle and told me not to worry. I asked him to sort out the tens machine while I went down stairs to make myself a hot water bottle to put on my back.

I filled the kettle and by the time the kettle had finished boiling my contractions were so strong and frequent that I was having difficulty staying on my feet. I went upstairs and lent on the bathtub. Matt came in as he could hear me groaning and grunting - by now I was getting a really strong urge to push. I shouted to him that something was wrong - why was I getting the urge to push so quickly? He told me irritably that this was ridiculous he was taking me to the hospital, where's the midwives numbers? I shrieked back that their was no time - sod the midwife ring 999. At this point he didn't grasp the fact that I was about to give birth.

I remember thinking that I was in the 'self doubt' phase saying to myself - I can't do this! and that's when it really dawned on me that the baby was nearly here. I took a deep breath and thought - you are going to do this and had a huge contraction which pushed the head out.

The 999 operator was talking to Matt on speaker phone and he said I can see a head. His voice was so high I could tell how scared he was but at this stage I felt really calm. He laid towels on the floor and laid me down. At this point my eldest daughter (two years old just) burst into the bathroom shouting 'what's going on???' I started laughing (she was using her nursery teacher voice) and said 'mummy's having a baby.' I then had one last huge contraction and our daughter Verity shot out onto the towels and the cord wrapped round her neck. Matt untangled her, my daughter jumped up and down shouting 'it's a baby, it's a baby!' Verity was so calm she didn't cry at first for what seemed like ages. She grunted and started to breath. I wrapped her up in a towel and cuddled her on the bathroom floor. Our perfect little baby she had arrived at 3.57 about 15 minutes after my contractions started.

The paramedics arrived about ten minutes later and I was allowed to have a natural third stage. The midwife arrived and everyone was gone by 6pm leaving us to have a family cuddle in bed. Matt got us all McDonalds breakfasts which I enjoyed with a glass of good champagne that I left on ice in the fridge.

Verity was perfectly healthy and only weighted 8.6Ib. Shes a very good baby who feeds well and is very calm.

My labour was exactly how I'd secretly hoped it would be and I'm pleased to say that the contractions were not 'painful' at all. I'd describe the sensation as intense like doing a heavy workout (I could have done it all again) and am sure the birth preparation track helped me to stay calm and positive. Would recommend it to everyone."

"I didn't feel I could relax and be hypnotised"

"The CDs had a huge impact on me during the labour and birth itself. I felt very calm and in control - especially my breathing. (The birth music was very relaxing). Before hand I didn't feel I could relax and be hypnotised but it appeared to work!

My labour started on the Wednesday late afternoon and my baby was born at 5pm on the Thursday. I used the TENS machine for approximately 12 hours on Wednesday evening and also kept mobile during contractions. I went into hospital at approximately 5am when contractions were approximately 5 minutes apart. I was 3cm dilated when I arrived but then things slowed down. I then continued with aromatherapy massage from my partner and walking/keeping mobile. I was sent home at midday and my waters broke at 12:30 and it then all started. Back in hospital I managed on gas and air and although I wanted a water birth they decided against it because of my blood pressure. My daughter was born at 4:50pm. I coped mainly by focusing on my breathing - mainly the out-breath. At no point did I feel I needed more pain relief. I'm confident the CDs did help - I was so calm! It was a very positive labour and birth for me."

"I was induced at 38 weeks and 4 days due to high blood pressure/pre-eclampsia with prostaglandin gel (2 times). I went into labour 12 hours after the second lot. My waters broke at 8:15am and at around midday I went to the labour ward. I stood up for the contractions and lent over the hospital bed, breathed and listened to the birth music on mp3 player. When 8cm dilated, baby's oxygen levels dropped. I was told to lie on my side with an oxygen mask on. The registrar was concerned but I felt in control and felt that if I breathed deeply, everything would be okay. It was, baby's oxygen levels went up and I stayed on the bed with the oxygen mask on. I gave birth in a semi-squatting position leaning over the head of the bed at 7:20pm. It wasn't actually painful at all!

The head of the labour ward (midwife) said that I didn't look like I was in labour and that they should give your CDs free to everyone!"

"I started with cramps on Sunday evening which developed into contractions on Monday lunch time. I was having 20-30 second contractions every 2 minutes. The hospital told me to call back when they were really painful, at least 60 seconds long and 3-4 minutes apart. I was told my baby was trying to get into labour. At 6pm my waters broke and the hospital asked me to come in saying they would probably send me home but needed to check me. I arrived at hospital at 7pm and was told the water birth expert would arrive in 1 ½ hours which wasn't a problem unless I was a miracle case. A while later the midwife confirmed I was fully dilated! Officially active labour was 2 hours and 27 minutes. A very positive experience. Pain - what pain??!!!"

"I was one of those women who was totally terrified of the thought of birth from the age of seven.

My sister who is a midwife was present and couldn't believe her sister was being so calm, relaxed and in control throughout the whole labour.

I went into a totally hypnotic world of peace and calm - I closed my eyes throughout, breathed deeply at each contraction and was sprayed with water to cool me, and a flannel on my forehead. My sister and I have been praising and verbally selling the amazing attributes of the CD to produce a most wonderful birth experience. I can honestly say I enjoyed yes enjoyed the birth with the aid of the CD.

I cannot thank you enough - 28 years of worry (worry is wasted energy)."

"My labour became established within 3-4 hours, then the birth itself happened quickly.
If we had left home half an hour later the baby would probably have been born in the car! I knew things were happening quickly when I got to the birth centre and the midwives filled the pool with buckets as well as the hose! I listened to the relaxing birth music CD, I think this had a soothing effect and so did the water (I had no other pain relief other than two paracetamol in early labour, and thought I was using a TENS machine for a while before I got in the pool but found my husband forgot to put the batteries in! No wonder it wasn't working!). The water was wonderful and so was the midwife, so the whole experience was positive especially as my baby boy was born, and floated straight up into my arms."

"It was ten days early when my waters broke at 3am and by the following lunchtime I was having strong contractions. I used a TENS machine but didn't feel it was much more than a distraction and something I could control. I took the birth music with me to hospital but couldn't use it as I had to be in a side room on a ward as the delivery suite was full. I couldn't use it at home either during labour as we had a power cut!

Nevertheless I focused on breathing, the fact that giving birth was instinctive and that my body would do the job regardless, so there was no point in being anxious. I even managed to drift off to sleep during contractions as I used the relaxation techniques. Midwives said I looked very "focused" and relaxed. I also kept my eyes closed almost the whole time to help me concentrate. Thank you for helping me to have the kind of birth experience I was hoping for, I will certainly use it again. At no point did I feel frightened or anxious, in fact I almost enjoyed the final stage! Thanks again."

"My waters broke at 11:30pm and we stayed at home until 2:30am. At my first contraction, I asked my husband not to mention the word 'pain' - instead to say 'power' and 'golden light'. So as the contractions got stronger I visualised the beautiful light coming forth and I welcomed all the sensations - indeed I found it all very exciting! We got to the birth centre at 2:50am and the midwife thought we were so relaxed she nearly sent us home! After 45 minutes she examined me and told me "not to be disappointed if I was only 2 or 3 centimetres dilated". To her amazement (and my surprise) I was already 10cm dilated! Hoorah! Lucas (meaning golden light after the visualization on your CD!) was born naturally with no stitches required at 6:08am. It was a wonderful experience. Thank you!

"I stayed calm and even fell asleep between contractions when I was pushing!"

"I was nearly two weeks overdue. Early labour began on Saturday night and remained with me on Sunday. I managed to stay at home using my TENS machine until Monday at 5 pm. I remained standing for each contraction and hung around my partner's neck. I felt relaxed and in control of the situation. I was moved in to the delivery room where I laboured through the night only using gas and air and my TENS.

Even though I had been booked in for induction, the midwives did not need to induce me or interfere as I was progressing naturally. The only thing they did was break my waters when I had the urge to push. I stayed calm and even fell asleep between contractions when I was pushing! After my baby was born I did not need any stitches and still felt in control of the situation.

I think this has continued with me during the first few weeks at home. The health visitor has said how calm and happy I seem.

I would say to any other woman that labour is mind over matter. Your body was built for this purpose and the pain is very manageable if you train your mind to cope with it. I want another baby and will definitely use the CD again."

"When I first went to do a tour of the labour ward I felt very negative about it. But after listening to the CD I felt more positive. I had to have an ECV done and felt calm when I was in the ward.

My contractions started a 5am. I had a bath and listened to the CD again. We went into hospital around 10.30am. The midwife examined me and I was 9 cm dilated! I had wanted a water birth but the midwife said it wouldn't be full in time. The second stage only lasted 20 minutes, and 4 pushes and he was out! Luke was born at 12.40pm. Throughout the experience the midwife kept commenting on how calm and relaxed I was. She said I could come again and she wished all women were so relaxed. The CD definitely helped me 100% to have a better attitude towards the hospital and to feel relaxed, confident and in control during the birth. Thank you so much for helping me to have a positive birth experience."

"I started contractions at 1pm, by 2.30pm I was at the hospital and 3 1/2 hours later, my little boy, Robert was born. The midwives were amazed as I was 5 cm dilated on arrival, which they say is not very common as I am a first time mum. The image of the comfort dial that I could control with my mind really helped. I put the fact that I had a short labour down to the CD. It helped me prepare mentally for giving birth, and took away my apprehension, and sheer terror. I had a very positive birth experience and my GP, health visitor have suggested that should I become pregnant again, I should seriously consider a home birth."

"Towards the end of my pregnancy I would 'cling' onto the CD, playing it repeatedly to banish negative thoughts. The CD was useful in reminding me about what women were intended for and to encourage a positive expectation of the birth experience. The CD was good value and helped to ensure I stayed on track and remained positive when overwhelmed with anxiety. I therefore believe it could work for most women. My friend commented on how calm I remained throughout the birth and I attribute a great deal to the hypnosis CD and would highly recommend it to anyone."

"I went into established labour during the late afternoon of Sunday March 12th 2006. I wasn't sure if it was really starting because since Friday I had contractions on and off. The pains quickly got stronger and by 8:30pm I was ready to go to the birth unit. I kept repeating 'calm, relaxed and in control' to myself to keep calm and just concentrated on each contraction as it came. I felt that the CD definitely helped me to control the pain.

I was already 8cm dilated by 9:15pm, I was thrilled! By the time the pool was filled I was beginning to feel the urge to bear down. The water was heavenly and really helped with the pain. Before long I was ready to push my baby out. I again visualised things from the latter part of the CD so that I could open up and eventually at 10:05pm my baby girl Daisy Bella was pushed through the water into my arms. It was so exhilarating, painful but I felt in control throughout the entire labour. Thank you Natal Hypnotherapy."

"I really wanted to write sooner, but thanks in large part to the CDs, I had SUCH a positive birth experience that I've been out and about, feeding and too busy!!

I spoke on the phone to a man who told me about his wife using the CDs for several home births - is this Maggie he spoke of? I was pregnant with 2nd child and had had a traumatic time with the 1st labour and subsequently with son in SCBU and was very nervous of the same thing happening. I didn't find out about the programme in time to order a whole set so just restricted to Pre Birth preparation and Labour CDs. In all honesty it is only in retrospect one can tell how useful they were, I think. I managed to get to 37+2 weeks this time (son was 34.5) and was therefore allowed a water-birth -which is what I'd hoped so much for especially after reading all the literature with the CD about a private, quiet birth place. Unlike 1st time which was in theatre (nowhere brighter, more crowded and scary then!! Narrowly missed c-section was ventouse, huge episiotomy...stitches that didn't heal and a baby that was taken from me).

I felt in control, with no fear and though at times more aware of the pain than last time, felt each dilation like a flower opening - it was truly amazing. I could feel my body doing what it needed to and it was intense but fabulous and my husband thanks you too - we both do sooo much. I couldn't have believed in advance HOW positive it could be. Just a bit of gas and air, a 5 hour labour and the after-pains were the most painful bit!

Phoebe Diana was born on 15th June at 6.06pm and weighed 7lbs 10oz. She's now a month old 8lb 2oz on Tuesday and beautiful. I have already lent the CDs to someone who used them for her labour!! She said they have been very helpful. Also have repeated this story to midwives and Health visitors and at breastfeeding support group to new mums and on Babycentre.co.uk birth board...so spreading the word.

Thanks so much again."

"I was so relaxed that I didn't even know I was in labour. The pains barely registered with me. It was only until 11:30pm that the pains were strong enough for me to call the hospital - even then I still wasn't sure if it was the real thing. I was told to come in. We drove up and I still felt ok. I used the dialling it down method. When I got to hospital I couldn't believe it was time to push! Three pushes later Julia was born - an amazing 20 minutes after we arrived! I felt completely in control, completely relaxed and I trusted myself and my body. I felt no fear - just calmness. I would recommend this CD to any mother to be. I felt so proud that it had gone so well! Thank you!"

"My pregnancy and birth experience should have been distressing as I was completely alone, but listening to the CDs every night made the whole experience both relaxing and very rewarding.

I have found the CDs have brought out an inner strength I never knew I had and have been a real confidence booster. I have suggested the CDs to many friends but until they sit down and try them, they do not believe they work. But once they do, they are converted to how powerful the subconscious mind can be. And there is nothing nicer than getting into bed and relaxing yourself listening to the CD."

"If the CD could help me as much as it did, then everyone should be given the chance to use it. My first birth as so horrific that I was devastated when I got pregnant again, as I could not face going through that again. I started using the CD the day it arrived and used it every other day. Suddenly the nightmares stopped and I could sleep again.

During the birth I had a student midwife with me who commented on how calm and relaxed I was. Even though I had the urge to push I was told not to. That is when the CD was particularly useful. I used a lot of the breathing and visualisation to ride the contractions and fight the urge to push. When they began threatening a c-section, I remembered the end part of the CD with the description of opening up to allow my baby to be born easily. Suddenly the urge to push came again and 10 minutes later my baby boy was born. Nobody could believe it. I had no stitches, no tears, not even grazing which, considering the size of him was incredible.

Since then I have had no post natal depression, no nightmare and am enjoying life with my 2 beautiful children. I am sorry it is so long winded, but I wanted to tell you what a difference the CD made to my life. I am firmly convinced that with out the CD and given both the size of my son and the way he was lying, I would have had a c-section and probably suffered for months afterwards. If any of what I have told you can help any other mother from going through what I did 2 years ago, please use it. I am so amazed at what can be achieved through Hypnosis that I am considering training so I can try and help others. I really cannot thank you enough"

"At 38 weeks I was diagnosed with Choloystasis and had to be induced.
I was extremely calm throughout the induction and went for a walk - had some pain but did not really dwell on it. My husband did not think anything was happening so went to have dinner in the canteen. When he came back my waters had already broken and I was sitting on the edge of the bed ready to go to the delivery suite. It was very quick.

While I was waiting for the birthing pool I dealt with the pain by concentrating on my breathing and by visualising nice places. After being in the pool I was soon fully dilated and my son was soon born. I only had 2 puffs of gas and air as I did not really want it. I can't say it did not hurt, but I managed my pain. I found this birth much easier than my first birth and my son is extremely happy and peaceful - he rarely cries and is a delight!"

I was induced with only a pessary then had a rapid labour. It was pretty difficult to cope with the pain and my breathing practice went out of the window, but I found it very helpful to keep trying to visualize the pain as being my uterus strongly contracting to open and pull up my cervix."

"During Pregnancy the CD helped me relax. It particularly helped when I had panicky moments near the end"

Triinu Holman

"I found the CD a great help both during my pregnancy and through the birth. During Pregnancy the CD helped me relax. It particularly helped when I had panicky moments near the end. The CD gave me confidence and helped me look forward to the birth rather than dread it. During labour, the hypnotherapy helped at the beginning and the end. I had a good pregnancy and positive birth experience. I definitely feel the Hypnotherapy helped me achieve this. I kept imagining I was on a beach every time the contractions came. I was really pleased that I had been able to stay at home so long. When the contractions were 2 minutes apart we went to hospital. There I got into the pool and thought I had only been in there 10 minutes and I felt bad that the staff had gone to the trouble of filling it only for me to get out as soon as I had got in. But my husband told me that I had actually stayed in the pool 2 hours."

"Thank you for your wonderful CD. I listened to your CD as often as possible before the birth. I felt very relaxed / calm / positive going into the birth.

They diagnosed me with pre eclampsia on the day of birth and said my cervix was closed and they said they would induce me in the morning. I spent the night visualizing my cervix opening (as you do on the CD) and by morning I was 2 cm……I pushed like mad and he came out in one go (like you described in the CD). I had an extremely pleasant birth experience - nothing like I was told to expect. I would do it all again tomorrow. I do think in part I was very lucky, but mainly I think a lot was due to creative visualization and being positive."

"As soon as I realised that I was having real contractions and not braxton hicks I had a mix of emotions, excitement and strange feeling of calmness.

It made me understand that instead of being afraid of the pain, I had to listen to my body. I don't think you can improve the CD. I would recommend your CD to everybody and it was well worth every penny. When I first listened to the CD I thought that it would do nothing but something just kicked in once I was in labour. I just found myself listening to my body and staying relaxed and calm, I pictured my special place when my contractions came. The midwives could not believe how calm I was and in tune with my body. I was so pleased I didn't need any more pain relief but I must say I was surprised as normally at the first sign of pain I take something for it."

"I didn't feel nervous about giving birth. I felt very well prepared"

Hannah Hill
Royal Sussex County Hospital Brighton

"I used it almost every day for the last 2 months of my pregnancy, it was my way of relaxing in the afternoon and I often fell asleep during or after listening. It was lovely to listen to with my husband. I felt he could better understand what I was going through. I felt very focused and in control with my breathing and positioning. I had my eyes shut nearly the whole time and felt in a trance like state (as I had done whilst listening to the CD) I held my husbands hand and was able to smile and relax between contractions. During contractions I found myself bellowing in a very primal way this seemed to help my focus. I didn't feel nervous about giving birth. I felt very well prepared - I'm most grateful for your CD and will tell my pre natal yoga teacher to recommend it to her class."

"Excellent CD. I know now I should have purchased it earlier and listened to it a lot more. I refused all painkillers, I knew I could get through with breathing correctly and remembering what you said on the CD. I was so tired but amazingly positive and kept my sense of humour throughout."

"I was able to manage my contractions through deep breathing and relaxing my shoulders"

"I was able to manage my contractions through deep breathing and relaxing my shoulders. As the contractions become very strong I found it incredibly difficult to relax through the intensity of them. Eventually I had some Pethidine to relax me and give me a little rest. I was determined not to have an epidural although it was very tempting. I kept believing in the body's natural ability to give birth. I fully support the principles of hypnotherapy and recommend it to all mothers to be. The end result is an easier, calmer birth and a content, calm baby. Thanks."

"I felt no need of any pain relief at all"

"By listening to it several times before the birth I found myself more relaxed and confident that the labour would go well and it made me so relaxed I got a good night sleep every time I listened to it.

I felt calm and reassured I could go through this with ease as I practiced your breathing techniques/relaxing. I felt no need of any pain relief at all. I actually started to look forward to each contraction knowing my baby will see me soon."

"I imagined myself being at Home and counting down the ten stairs and telling myself there would be no pain when I got to the bottom"

"Throughout the contractions I imagined myself being at Home and counting down the ten stairs and telling myself there would be no pain when I got to the bottom. I even stepped over the cat that always sleeps on step 5!"
