Why I became a practitioner

I first heard about Natal Hypnotherapy when chatting to a GP colleague about how she had coped with the labour of her two children who were born at home.  Completing my Midwifery training some 7 years earlier, I had over the years become increasing interested in the birth preparation available to women and their birthing partners for this life event.
Researching Natal Hypnotherapy, I became aware of the positive impact it can have to support women and their birthing partners to feel totally prepared for their birth of their baby.  I wanted to empower women to have confidence in their ability to cope during labour and the birth and to enable birthing partners to clearly understand their vital role in this process.

My core beliefs surrounding pregnancy and birth

I believe that every woman and birthing partner should be fully prepared for their birthing experience. That normality should always be promoted and that holistic care and birth preparation should address the emotional aspects of childbirth and not focus exclusively upon the physiological process.

My personal experience of using Natal Hypnotherapy

I have cared for women and their birthing partners in the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period since commencing my midwifery training in 1999.

My first experience of Natal Hypnotherapy I found very moving and emotional.

I had observed couples attending a Natal Hypnotherapy Birth Preparation Course. I witnessed participants growing in their knowledge and understanding of the journey that was ahead of them.

They were equiped with the skills, tools and coping strategies to promote normality and a positive birthing experience. At the end of the course the women were clearly more confident in their ability to cope with labour and their birthing partners were visibly confident and totally understanding of their role and ability to support their partner.

I was moved to tears(which I tried to hide!) as I witnessed the immense positive impact of the course. I had not, in 10 years of midwifery, witnessed such excellent birth preparation for women and their birthing partners

What I feel women gain from attending my course

Confidence in their ability to give birth and remain relaxed and calm during the birthing process. Women will feel in control of their emotions and learn how to recognise and overcome fears or anxiety. They will learn pain management techniques, deep breathing, relaxation and visualization that will help them feel confident, relaxed and positive about their journey.

Their birthing partner will understand what to expect during labour and their role during the birth. They will know what their partner needs and wants and will learn how to keep her calm and relaxed. They will learn massage techniques and how to work with the medical team.

Women and their birthing partners will have practised hypnosis and experienced the benefits of deep relaxation.

They will be able to write their own affirmations, hypnotherapy and visualisation scripts.
