Why I became a practitioner

I am a childbirth educator and was becoming more and more frustrated at the negative images of birth that couples were coming to my classes believing. The majority of them came thinking that what lay ahead of them was an ordeal that had to be suffered through!

Some of them were pleasantly surprised at the births they had but a lot of them experienced a 'self fulfilling prophecy'. This, of course, was not their fault but women and their partners are often let down by the busy labour wards and over-stretched midwives and are swept away on a cascade of intervention.

I became an NH practitioner because I wanted to concentrate soley on the skills that give the labouring woman and her partner back the control. I want couples to believe in a woman's ability to birth her baby in whatever birth environment they have chosen. And most importantly to enable couples to look forward to the birth as the start of an amazing journey.

My core beliefs surrounding pregnancy and birth

Birth works! It is so important to instil that belief and confidence in pregnant women and enable them to trust in their own abilities and instincts

Informed decision making is vital for empowering women and their partners and essential when it comes to making decisions about birth

There is no such thing as a 'right way' or a 'wrong way' to give birth. What is important is that it is the right way for the couple involved. No one should be made to feel as though they have failed

My experience of working with pregnant women and my personal experience of Natal Hypnotherapy

I am a teacher for the National Childbirth Trust. I teach regular weekly courses for those expecting their first child and I also teach specialised courses for those expecting more than one baby.

I have attended several births

What I feel women gain from attending my course

Women attending the NH courses gain a confidence in their own abilities to birth their babies and learn to trust their instincts and start to look forward to what lies ahead. They develop skills that are not only invaluable for childbirth but vital for parenting both in the early days and for years to come.

My related qualifications

Diploma in Higher Education Antenatal Teaching from The University of Bedfordshire/ National Childbirth Trust
