Faye Fenton's Profile

Why did you become a Natal Hypnotherapist?
When I discovered I was pregnant for the first time I was excited, but at the same time really anxious about giving birth. I didn't want to spend the whole of my pregnancy worrying however, and so decided to give hypnotherapy a go.
After my very first session I couldn't believe it, I was actually starting to look forward to the birth. From then on I went on an amazing journey - seeing myself relaxed and calm, welcoming the sensations of labour, safe in the knowledge that this is what women have been doing for thousands of years.
Following a straightforward three hour labour we finally got to meet our little boy – and he looked just how I’d imagined in my hypnosis sessions! Yes, it was hard work and very intense, but I went with it and shut out anything that what was going on around me.
I knew that if I could undergo this huge change in mindset, with such amazing results, then there must be many other women out there who could benefit too. I was so blown away by the whole experience that I wanted to spread the word and help other mums to have as positive an experience as I did and so I decided on a major change of career direction and went on to train as a Natal Hypnotherapy Practitioner myself.
My three main philosophies around birth are:-
1. Looking forward to the birth and regularly visualising meeting your baby can make all the difference in the kind of labour you experience. The mind-body connection is the one of most important factors in preparing for a positive birth. Whether it’s yoga, meditation, hypnosis, or practising deep breathing, taking the time to regularly tune into your inner-self means that entering a relaxed, calm state will come automatically during labour.
2. Your baby knows when the time is right to enter the world and your body understands this. Attempting to change this natural process through medical intervention is not helpful for women experiencing normal pregnancy and labour.
3. Putting all your trust in your birthing body and following your instincts will allow you to welcome the sensations of labour and flow with them. You have all the resources you need within yourself to create the optimum environment for labour, wherever you happen to give birth. However, partners and medical staff can greatly help by giving you the time, space and support to achieve inner calm and focus.
